John Dory happy hour at the Ace Hotel. Yes please. Because half a dozen beautifully fresh oysters and a fine glass of cava is a steal at $10. But given the rave NY Times review, perhaps I was expecting just a bit more. The mignonette could have had just a touch more cilantro or chili (although perhaps the oysters were meant to shine instead of the fixin’s), and the celebrated stuffed squid, which the review declared “among the best things you can eat in New York City,” I found a bit imbalanced - somewhat overwhelmed by the white beans when I would have preferred a richer tang of chorizo. But I will be back. Darling wait staff, relaxed atmosphere, and an as-yet untried cocktail menu from old friend Sasha Petraske made sure of that.

HBO’s Game of Thrones premieres tomorrow, Sunday, and its marketing campaign has been nothing short of brilliant. From Twitter to facebook to food trucks, throned-out pedi-cabs, and throne photo ops, the series is already ubiquitous. George RR Martin’s novels are page-turning even to non fantasy readers like myself. Excellent characterization, stunning plot developments, intricate relationships, and epic shades of gray.

If the series lives up to the books and the marketing campaign, it will be so off the chain you won’t even see the links glistening in the distance.
